PSHE

The PSHE programme at Sacred Heart Catholic College has been developed to ensure that our pupils have the knowledge and understanding to enable them to become informed and active citizens. Pupils are taught within their form groups, and all within the Catholic ethos of the College.

Within PSHE we aim to equip pupils with a sound knowledge of government, democracy, law and justice. Develop an interest in, and commitment to, participation in volunteering as well as other forms of responsible activity, that they will take with them into adulthood. Enable pupils to manage their money on a day to day basis, and plan for future financial needs.

The benefits to pupils are numerous as PSHE prepares them to manage many of the most critical opportunities, challenges and responsibilities they will face growing up. It also helps them to connect and apply the knowledge and understanding they learn in all other subjects to practical, real-life situations while helping them feel safe and secure enough to fulfil their academic potential.

PSHE at Sacred Heart Catholic College does not occur only in a vacuum. The discreet lesson is the vehicle for which designated curriculum time occurs, but other subjects include elements which are audited yearly. Specifically, in Year 10, the statutory programme of study in PSHE covers Careers and work related learning leading to a work experience placement.  Time is also allocated to time management and reducing stress; health issues, such as the effects of alcohol and smoking; personal safety; issues of local, national and worldwide citizenship and specific attention is paid to financial discussion of debt, money management and economics.
